This series of photographs, taken in 1986, documents the individuals who worked in the small businesses, markets, shops and restaurants along East 149th Street in the South Bronx neighborhood of New York City. It was first exhibited under the title On the Job: Portraits of East 149th Street at the Hostos Art Gallery, part of Hostos Community College at Grand Concourse and East 149th St.

The project was sponsored by the Hostos Community Advisory Council with funds contributed by the office of Bronx Borough President Stanley Simon and the Department of Cultural Affairs, New York City.
